We demonstrate a 2xMOPP
medical interface using NVEs ground-breaking data couplers with integrated
DC-to-DC convertors.
We use a creepy doll with an ECG simulator as a patient:
A high-pot tester is set for four kilovolts as required for 2xMOPP. The tester
is set for a 0.3 milliamp fail-current threshold, which is the toughest limit
under UL 60601.
A beeping ECG detector shows data is going through the isolator, and the isolator
remains intact during the safety requirement test of four kilovolts for a minute,
with negligible leakage current.
We also show how our custom-tooled True-8 package meets the
other key requirement for 2xMOPP under UL 60601 or IEC 60601, which is true 8
millimeters creepage.

NVEs industry-leading

configurations. It includes versions with either 3.3-to-3.3 volt integrated DC-to-DC
convertors (IL46xx and IL761xVE) or 3.3-to-5 volt integrated boost convertors
(IL48xx and IL781xVE).

and patented GMR isolation technology give these parts best-in-class performance
and miniaturization.
Low Parts Count
Just two external bypass capacitors are required for the DC-to-DC convertors.
No additional regulation and no ferrite beads for EMI mitigation are needed.
Fully Regulated
Some DC-to-DC convertors are only semi-regulated, but these parts'
supplies are fully regulated with excellent line and load regulation.
Lowest Ripple
One millivolt peak-to-peak ripple on the DC-to-DC convertor outputs is an order
of magnitude less than conventional parts and means low noise and reliable systems.
Ample Power
250-milliwatt integrated DC-to-DC convertors provide enough current for plenty
of bus nodes or external circuitry.
Soft Start
A smooth output power ramp allows seamless power sequencing.
Lowest EMI
Frequency hopping and integrated shielding provide the lowest EMI in the industry,
eliminating the need for external shielding or ferrite beads.
High Speed
The transceivers are rated at a best-in-class 40 megabits per second and
the couplers are rated at a full 110 megabits per second for speed, transmission
distance, and signal fidelity.
Full Isolation
A unique ceramic/polymer composite isolation barrier provides the industry's best
barrier resistance and virtually unlimited life. The transceivers are rated at
a full 2.5 kVrms, and the data couplers at a remarkable 6 kVrms. All
parts are UL1577 registered and certified under the stringent new VDE 0884-17
standard.
Standard Package
The parts are packaged in a JEDEC-standard 16-pin wide-body package with true
eight-millimeter creepage in accordance with IEC 60601.
A Range of Configurations
Configurations include two-, three-, and four-channels, plus half- or full-duplex
RS-485 / RS-422. Most configurations are available with either 3.3-to-3.3 volt
DC-to-DC convertors or 3.3-to-5 volt boost convertors:
